| At approximately 12:53 a.m. on September 26, 2026, West Chicago Fire Protection District personnel responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 900 block of Gates Street. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke from the residence and were advised that the kitchen was on fire. Occupants initially reported that everyone was believed to be outside of the home. Firefighters advanced a hose line to the kitchen area and quickly knocked down the majority of the fire while additional crews began ventilation and search operations.
During fireground operations, firefighters heard sounds from inside the residence and discovered that an occupant remained inside. Crews immediately located the individual and removed the victim from the structure. The victim was transferred to an awaiting ambulance and transported to Loyola University Medical Center for treatment of inhalation injuries. No firefighters were injured during the incident. The fire originated in the kitchen.
A fire investigation was completed, and while the exact cause could not be determined, investigators determined the fire originated in the kitchen. Primary and secondary searches of the residence were completed, and no additional occupants were located.
