| With Thanksgiving fast approaching, the West Chicago Fire Protection District would like to share some safety tips that will help keep your holiday celebration safe: 1. Stay in the kitchen when you cook on the stovetop so you can monitor the food. 2. Keep children and pets at least 3 feet from the stove and turn pot handles inward to prevent accidental spills of scalding liquid. 3. Don't leave candles with flames unattended. Consider battery-lit "candles" as a safe alternative. 4. Never use water on a grease fire. The best way to put out a grease fire is to suffocate the flames with a fire extinguisher, baking soda, or a pot lid. 5. Minor burns should be treated with cool running water - never put butter or ointment on burns. Seek medical attention with moderate to severe injuries. 6. If you are deep frying a turkey (check out the safety video), use EXTREME caution outdoors and keep a fire extinguisher close by - Use the PASS method for fire extinguishers - Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep!
Remember - if you have an emergency, we are only 3 numbers away - Call 9-1-1.
Best wishes for a safe and Happy Thanksgiving from the West Chicago Fire Protection District - "Our family protecting yours". |
