At approximately 5:55 a.m., the West Chicago Fire Protection District was dispatched for a report of flames coming from the area of a residence under construction at 3N400 block of Shagbark Drive in unincorporated West Chicago. Initial callers were unsure whether the fire involved the home or a nearby tree.
Upon arrival, crews located a small fire at the peak of the first-floor roofline. The fire was confined to a limited area and was quickly brought under control. The home was unoccupied and under construction at the time of the incident, and no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
Based on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the weather conditions at the time, it appears possible that the home was struck by lightning. However, we cannot confirm this as the cause at this time, and the exact cause remains undetermined.
Although the fire damage itself was limited, the home sustained water damage from both the weather and firefighting operations, along with some heat and smoke damage in the affected area. The home was turned over to the homeowner and deemed uninhabitable at this time.
