Firefighter Education

Firefighters undergo many classroom hours of initial training to do their job! The first certification a firefighter will need to ascertain is his or her "firefighter II." Firefighter II teaches fire behavior and fire ground operations, as well as a multitude of other skills that an individual will need to perform the duties of a firefighter. Their are many disciplines that an individual can become certified in through the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. A few of the areas are:

  • Hazardous Materials
  • Technical Rescue
  • Fire Investigation
  • Fire Officer
  • Extrication
  • Fire Appartus Engineer
  • Fire Prevention
  • Fire Service Instructor

Some fire departments have specific requirements that firefighters must meet to perform their duties, others will allow the firefighter to choose their course of studies. Most firefighters however continue their education throughout their career.
